Last Thursday was a super-sized men and women’s tennis match between PC and Winston-Salem State in which we completely dominated.

Since my knowledge of sports in general is somewhat limited, I think I will stick to just showing you guys awesome photos of our very own victorious Bluehose!

PC Sports: Tennis Through The Wire

February 11th, 2010

I must admit this is the very first time I have attended a tennis game here at PC, but I have to say that I loved watching it.  Although we lost today,  I could tell that everyone was giving their all and that some die hard fans were there to support the team.  One of the coolest things about the fans was the fact that they would pick out who they believed needed support and would move over in mass to be closer to them and shout cheers.  That my friends, is the mark of true fans.  I cannot wait till the next home game so that, among other things, I won’t need to rely on other people to tell me when to cheer.

Hopefully, I will be able to obtain a media pass to take photos inside the fence (though I realize I will need to prepare for any wayward tennis balls).  I’m excited at the prospect and you guys should be too.  After all, we all want awesome shots of our team don’t we?

As many of you may already know, the PC Intramural soccer playoffs begin at 5:30pm tonight, February 4, 2010. With an exciting line-up scheduled, now would be the perfect time for anyone who has not come out to support their favorite teams to grab their big foam fingers and make their way to the Springs gymnasium. Whether you are a die-hard soccer fan, or just looking for something fun to do while hanging out with your friends, tonight’s games will prove to be something entertaining to do in an otherwise empty, boring town.

Tonight’s line-up includes the girls of Tri-Sigma, the guys of Alpha Sigma Phi, The Chugging Charlies, Team Oatmeal, The Fat Oysters, The Buffal-hose Gals, Dark Knights, and The Raiders.  Come on out and cheer for your favorite team.  I, for one, will be on the side-lines cheering for the Super Sigmas and Alpha Sigma Phi.  Come support your teams, lest you can’t handle the heat.

The following is the schedule for February 4th:

5:30: Raiders vs. Chugging Charlies

6:30: Fat Oysters vs. Team Oatmeal

8:30: Buffal-hose Gals vs. Super Sigmas

9:30: Dark Knights vs. Alpha Sigma Phi

PC Sports: Men’s Lax Scrimmage

Written by Akeem Favor
January 26th, 2010

Last Saturday, amongst the rain and cold, our PC lacrosse team beat the opposing team of Belmont Abbey with a score of 9 to 4.

The game started at 1:00 p.m. and began with an interesting practice technique in which the players utilized both sides of the field.  One side of the field pitted PC’s offense versus the opposing team’s defense while the other side was Belmont Abbey’s offense versus PC’s defense.  After playing this way for the better part of an hour, the real game began and I, being such a big fan, decided to endure the icy wrath of mother nature in order to watch.

That being said, I was having a bit of bad luck that day.  While I was able to take a lot of stunning photographs, I missed actually seeing most of the goals being scored.  Much to my chagrin, I always looked up the split second after the ball actually went into the net.  What I do know, however, is that our team has the teamwork aspect down pact.  There is nothing like watching an opposing team’s coach arguing with his players over teamwork while your team keeps racking up points.

Be sure to come watch the Women’s Lax scrimmage this Saturday at 11:00 a.m.  Come support your team!

They have done it again! PC’s Men’s Basketball team defeated Montreat College tonight for their second win of the season bringing our record to 2-5.

The game started out strong with back-and-forth even scoring by both teams. Things looked bad as the Blue Hose trailed by five near the end of the first half, but the defense came back strong with a layup and two free throws to even the playing field once more. The rest of the half was neck-in-neck scoring between the teams, but PC confidently walked into halftime with a five point lead.

The team came back from halftime strong, holding their lead until Montreat shot a three pointer, bringing them back to level ground. Once again, PC’s defenses showed their determination giving PC a ten point lead with just under nine minutes left in the game. Their strength continued and the Blue Hose walked away with another victory: 68-50.

The next home Men’s Basketball game is scheduled for December 3rd at 7p.m. and will be played in Templeton Gym.

A Close Call for Homecoming

October 25th, 2009

This Saturday, October 24th, the Bailey Memorial stadium was swarming with supporters ready to enjoy a football game against the Virginia Military Institute’s Keydets. Before the game, Presbyterian College alumni joined with current students and enjoyed a catered lunch from Greenville Dining Hall in celebration of all of the Homecoming activities. When the football team processed into the stadium in their traditional Hosewalk, they were greeted by the cheers of many PC fans, Alumni, students, and members of the PC pep band.

The game kicked off to a good start as a flag was thrown against the Keydets. With just over four minutes left in the first quarter, the Keydets showed their spirit with a touchdown and accompanying field goal. Two minutes later, they slipped through PC’s defenses for another touchdown/field goal bringing the score at the end of the first quarter to PC:0, VMI:14.

Following the first quarter, several members of the 1959 football team were accompanied onto the field and recognized for their successes in the 1959 Tangerine Bowl. They were the only team in Presbyterian College’s history to ever be invited to a bowl game.

During the second quarter, PC came back strong and ran the ball into the end zone. There was a flag on the play, however, and the Blue Hose were moved back to the 35 yard line. With just over four minutes left in the second quarter PC’s #6, Parker Fleming, received a pass from #16, Myron Gary, and ran it in for a touchdown. Less than a minute later, VMI came back and scored a touchdown. PC tried to fight back but their attempted field goal from the 25 was incomplete leaving the final score at the end of the half 7-21 in favor of the other team.

The halftime show was full of excitement as the homecoming court came onto the field and was greeted by the 2008 homecoming queen, Lauren Deal, the President of the college, Dr. John Griffith, and the student body president, Lance Poston. The second runner up was Anna Burch (representing Omicron Delta Kappa), and the first runner up Lauren Thomas (representing Student Volunteer Services). The homecoming queen, Bridget Marshall (representing Zeta Tau Alpha), was given flowers and was whisked away in a shiny red convertible.

VMI entered into the second half with rearing energy and attempted a field goal right off the bat. It failed however and they didn’t get another lead until the end of the quarter. With 1:31 on the clock, the Keydets neared the end-zone, but were stopped and pushed back by the PC defense. Tensions rose as the Keydets started back on the 21, but were short lived when, with 53 seconds left on the clock, VMI scored again.

The fourth quarter was full of back and forth scoring between the two teams. PC scored the first touchdown of the quarter, followed by a VMI field goal at the 7. A half minute later, PC scored another touchdown, but was unsuccessful in their field goal attempt. With 5 minutes remaining in the game, Freshman Mark Williams gave the crowd a scare as he lay injured on the field. After a few minutes, however, Williams got up and jogged off the field leaving PC with a first down. The final score of the game was 20-30, Keydets.

Groovy Goals and Beating Wofford: an Interview

Written by NatalieH
September 21st, 2009

Last Thursday, our fantastic women’s soccer team played the Wofford Terriers and won 1-0. I interviewed Morgan Fragapane who scored the winning goal.

Natalie: So Mo, what was your favorite moment from the Wofford game?

Mo: When Coach wanted to give the center mids a breather in the second half, he told Steph Thacker and me to go in and take their place. That one decision like determined the game I guess…Because Steph Thacker just worked with me very well in the middle and through a series of plays we got our goal that won the game.

Natalie: Awesome! Would you mind describing that goal for us?

Mo: They had been shoving the ball down the field and finally we were starting to get aggressive on defense and I won the ball and played it to Kylie Mills towards the left corner. She looked to see who was around her and found Alice Blackwell behind her and Alice was looking for the ball to play and played a perfect ball into my feet in the middle and I took a touch from about 30 yards out I’d say and shot it and saw it going in but it hit the post and I got excited and then I got nervous because I thought it wasnt in. And then he called it a goal and I was just relieved…

Natalie: So how did it feel beating Wofford?

Mo: Honest opinion? Beating Wofford was like beating any team. But the difference was that as a team we had more confidence that we could win a game against a school that put up a fight on the field. And I guess to me it felt like beating Wofford was something that the seniors really wanted and the fact that we could come together as a team and defeat them made me feel happy.
