Pet Exposé: Sampson
February 4th, 2010
Let’s face it; there are quite a few PC students who have pets. However, because having pets in dorm rooms is frowned upon, these poor animals never get their time to shine. That’s where the idea of a ‘pet exposé’ comes in. Pet exposé will not only allow other students to get to know the secret lives of pets on campus, it will also allow the closeted creatures to be celebrated.
My first interview with a PC pet was a difficult task. Thanks to Sampson’s anonymous owner, I got to spend a lot of time with him/her to find out his/her real personality. After staring Sampson directly in the eyes a few times, I learned that this was not the way to approach a turtle. He was pretty shy, but with a little food he came right out of his shell (literally).
Full Name: Sampson Fisher
Gender: Unknown
Date of Birth: April 2009
Q) Sampson, how do you like living at PC?
A) ‘The weather is nice and there are a lot of nice people. It is kind of hard to clean my tank in a hall bathroom though.’
Q) What do your daily activities include?
A) ‘Sleeping, basking in the sun, swimming around and eating.*’ (If ever given the chance to meet Sampson, don’t tell him that his ‘sun’ is merely a heating lamp.)
Q) Do you have anything interesting in your tank/home?
A) ‘I have a T-shaped PVC pipe that I hide in, half of a cup to keep my filter quiet, and a nice big rock to rest on.’
Q) What do you do for fun?
A) ‘I am always finding new ways to try and escape. It’s entertaining.’
After I got down the basic questions, I asked a few other people what they would ask a turtle if given the chance. The questions were just as interesting as the answers.
Q1) Do you now or have you ever had a crush on April**?
A1) He shyly answered ‘We’re just friends.’
Q2) What is it really like inside of your shell?
A2) ‘It could use some redecorating.’
Q3) How do you survive being so bored all the time?
Q4) ‘Sleeping, eating, and basking in the sun all day is livin’ the life. It seems much better than being in school all day.’
Q5) Do you have anything against Hare?
A5) ‘Not particularly. But when Tortoise and Hare race, I am team Tortoise all the way.’
Thanks again to Sampson and his/her owner!
* Unfortunately, Sampson has a vision problem that hinders a few of the activities that he mentions. While observing him, I noticed that he swims rather well. However, due to his possible blindness, he runs into the side of his tank… quite frequently. Feeding time is also a problem for Sampson, as well has his owner. He cannot see, therefore he cannot see his food.
** April is the reporter on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
